[I know I was supposed to talk about running shoes and arches today, but I'm having a little moment of silence here. Bear with me.]
Coming from a girl who “never listens to music when I run” … you might wonder why I even care that my little music player turned belly-up.
It’s true – unless I’m on a dreadmill, I don’t really like running with music. I’m yet to find earbuds that actually stay in my ears, I usually manage to get tangled up in the cord, and my mom’s voice is playing softly in the back of my head warning me about cars, bikes, dogs, and people out to do no good.
But put me on a bike and we have a different story. Two reasons: a) I’m usually on a bike for a longer period of time, and b) I need something to distract me from the fact that my pelvic bones are crumbling help keep the tempo up by 40 miles. And for that, I turn to music.*
My trusty iPod touch – 1st gen – has been with me since August of 2008, when I purchased my first Mac and moved my life out to Boston. Since then, it has served as so much more than simply a device for delivering workout music – managing to-do lists, catching up on This American Life and Brian Regan during drives up north, playing Words With Friends during class, testing myself with the MCAT study app, and the ever necessary Google Maps for when I get lost. I brought it in to a “genius” at the Apple Store in Southdale Mall (fun fact: the first indoor shopping mall in the US), and after several diagnostic tests and a good ol’ fashioned reboot, the “genius” said, “You’re S.O.L.”**
And S.O.L. I am. $250 for a new iPod touch is not in my college-student budget, and I don’t know if I actually want an iPhone, even if AT&T will give me one for $20.*** I’ve looked on Craigslist and ebay, but how do you know you’re not getting another bit-the-bullet/damaged/dropped in the fish tank mp3 player?
So I turn to you Groucho Sportsters. Do you listen to music when you’re out on the road? Or do you go au naturel? Do you use an iPhone for your music or do you use an old, I don’t care if it rains on it, kind of mp3 player? And just for me – what kind of music keeps you going?

I use a crummy old MP3 player for treadmill runs. Otherwise, I don’t usually listen to music. I’m not doing any long runs right now, so I like to just get lost in my thoughts during my 45 minute allotment of running joy.
Occasionally music for running, but otherwise that’s it. The Sansa SanDisk Clip is fantastic. Small and light enough to clip onto a pair of running shorts. I run the cord under my shirt. I find it helps a little.
Never while riding. Even turned low and with the left bud out I find having music while riding is just distracting and I can’t really enjoy the music with only one ear bud anyway. Plus I like the sound of the world when I’m on the bike. And if I need music, just like Andy Dufresne in the hole, I have Mr. Mozart with me everywhere I go and that player never needs batteries.
And of course I will catch you
I also don’t really like running with music. I’m not comfortable that there’s something in my ears. I just love to sing on my own while running or having a dog with me. Maybe there have different techniques every person to entertain themselves while running.
